Timeline

November 21, 2002: AWAKEN, Inc. as a not-for-profit organization, incorporated by the State of Indiana.

April 27, 2003 Informational Dinner for community leaders held at the home of Dr. & Mrs. Bahrami.

May 7, 2003: First Annual Fundraising Dinner is held at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Muncie, Indiana.

July 2003: Dr. and Mrs. Bahrami travel to Afghanistan with 28 suitcases of medicine & medical / humanitarian supplies. Dr. Bahrami sees hundreds of men, women, and children in 3 villages and in the city of Jalalabad.

May 22, 2004 2nd Annual Fundraising Dinner is held.

June 2004 Ground is broken for the construction of the Qala-I-Malakh School.

November 2004 Completed school is dedicated and classes begin for approximately 300 students.

May 2005 1st Women’s Training Center opens.

January 2006 Qala-I-Malakh School enrollment now tops 400 students, over 50% are female; additional teachers are hired.

February 2006 2nd Women’s Training Center opens in Zan abad village to serve a different area of Beshood District. 34 women are currently enrolled.

March 2006 Medical Center Building Plans are complete. Fundraising dedicated to the construction planned.

April 2006 Annual Fundraising dinner held April 29, 2006. 2008Medical Facility construction begins 2008Medical Facility opens


AWAKEN is a not-for-profit organization formed to enable Afghan individuals and families to become literate and self-sufficient. AWAKEN endeavors to fulfill this mission by assisting its Jalalabad office with the planning and development of programs that will provide educational opportunities, vocational training, health care services, and emergency assistance to Afghan families, particularly women and children.
